How to Get Around Paso Robles

It may come to your surprise, that the Paso Robles wine region is the largest wine region in California. Paso Robles covers over 614,000 acres, and 32,000 of those acres are designated to planted grapevines. There are more than 200 wineries throughout the region or tasting rooms located downtown, most of them are family owned and operated.

How to get around Paso Robles, greatly depends on your wine tasting itinerary and where you plan to go during your time in wine country.

There are 7 different ways to get around Paso Robles:

I will explain each one in detail below, so you can decide which form of transportation works best for you and your itinerary.

Is There Uber in Paso Robles

Uber and Lyft are both available for transportation in Paso Robles, but may not be your most reliable option to get around Paso Robles. Booking a shared car is a great way to get around the city of Paso Robles and to the many different wineries.

Uber and Lyft are available in Paso Robles

However, similar to booking an Uber in Napa Valley, you could run the risk of there not being any Ubers available, long wait times, fluctuating prices, not the best phone service, and canceled Ubers. We have all had that happen when you have been booked by an Uber (even in advance), canceled by the driver, and then rebooked over and over again.

You eventually get to your destination, but it’s a huge waste of time and effort. And let’s be honest, the last thing you want to worry about when on vacation is booking an Uber to get to your next wine tasting on time.

Is Uber reliable in Paso Robles

Ubers can be a reliable form of transportation in Paso Robles, depending on your itinerary. For example, you can take advantage of the reserve in advance feature and schedule an Uber beforehand. This is perfect if you have a more flexible schedule.

Such as going downtown for a dinner reservation or scheduling a shared car to get you to the San Luis Obispo Airport for your flight. Then, I think Uber or Lyft is the ideal option.

However, if you have a full day of wine tasting, where you plan to visit multiple wineries in a day and need to stick to a strict schedule, Uber may not be the most reliable form of transportation.

Paso Robles is a little more flexible with wine tasting reservations than Napa Valley. Some smaller wineries do still allow walk-ins. However, most wineries prefer or require you to have a reservation. Also, if you are visiting on a busy weekend, a winery can’t hold a reservation for you. You will need to be on time for your tastings or they will give up your reservation.

If Ubers aren’t the most reliable option, then what is? In my opinion, the most reliable and safest option would be to book a tour or hire a designated driver.

Uber Wine is No Longer Available

You may have heard of a service that Uber offered called Uber Wine. It would allow you to request a designated Uber driver to stay with you while you visit the wineries in Paso Robles. Unfortunately, this feature is no longer available on the Uber App.

To get an Uber in Paso Robles, you will request a ride and wait for an available driver. Or schedule a driver in advance to your desired destination.

Book a Small Group Wine Tour in Paso Robles

Booking a small group tour is the perfect way to create a memorable experience in Paso Robles. This “Hop-On Hop-Off” Wine Tasting Tour is a stress-free way to get around to the Paso Robles wineries. With this tour, you can create your own itinerary by selecting wine tastings at four wineries.

The tour company will provide you with a wide selection of over 90 wineries to choose from, including some of our favorites like Booker Vineyards and Tooth and Nail Winery, (you have to choose between the east side or west side of Paso Robles). Or if you are overwhelmed with choosing the wineries, they can assist and pick them for you.

There are many tours to choose from for a day of wine tasting in Paso Robles. I recommend this one because it allows you to customize your wine tour to exactly what you want. You can add on lunch, which I highly suggest. You can select the wineries you want to visit and can purchase the tastings on your own. Or you can have it included in the price.

Hire a Designated Driver in Paso Robles

An awesome and responsible way to experience the Paso Robles wineries would be by hiring a designated driver. With this Paso Robles Wine Tour, you provide the car, and they provide you with your own designated driver.

Your DD for the day will take you and your group to the wineries while you sit back and enjoy the comfort of your car and not have to worry about drinking and driving.

This is a great option for getting to the wineries because it is like having your own private tour at a way cheaper rate. Especially if you are traveling with a group, this is the way to go.

Your designated driver can follow your itinerary or give suggestions of wineries to visit in Paso Robles. Another great perk, your driver can also pick up food for you and bring it along.

The electric bikes take the average person around 30 miles on one charge. Your rental also will come with helmets, saddlebags, and locks.

    Taxi Services

A dependable and easy to use taxi company in Paso Robles is Fetch Transportation Services. There metered taxis are available daily from 10:00 am to 12:00 am.

To book a same-day taxi service, the best way to get in touch with them would be to call 805.419.3382. Fetch also offers private tours and shuttles for up to 25 people.

    Is Paso Robles Walkable

Paso Robles has a very charming and walkable downtown area. As the central hub of Paso Robles, downtown is full of rich history, a Downtown City Park, and many things to do. A stop downtown is a must when visiting Paso Robles!

Take a stroll downtown and browse the boutique shops, art galleries, and antique shops. Relax and unwind at one of the numerous wine tasting rooms, or grab a bite to eat at one of the incredible eateries.

Can You Walk Between Wineries in Paso Robles

Most of the wineries are not walkable because Paso Robles is so large and spread out that there are either highways or windy and steep roads between them, which are not safe for walking.

However, if you want to walk between wineries, your best bet would be to go to downtown Paso Robles and visit the tasting rooms.

Or you can explore the unique and fun Tin City. Situated in a small warehouse district outside of downtown Paso Robles is Tin City, a tasting area for wine, beer, and spirits. The walkable industrial park has 20 small-production wineries, food trucks, and live music for a different experience in Paso Robles.

Rent a Car & Drive Yourself

Another option is to drive yourself to the wineries. If you decide to drive your car or your rental car, it would be the cheapest option for transportation to the wineries. However, that means you will need someone from your group to be a designated driver for the day.

You can still participate in a wine tasting as the DD. It is acceptable to taste your wine but not swallow it. Do as the professional do and swirl, smell and taste the wine but instead of swallowing it just spit it out in the designated spit bucket.

Driving yourself to the wineries is budget friendly. However, if it is your first time visiting Paso Robles or you do not get to visit often, I do recommend paying a little extra for a tour or designated driver.

You will want everyone from your group to have a great time, and you do not want to risk drinking and driving.

Paso Robles is a lot more casual and relaxed than Napa Valley. Comfort is key for wine tasting in the central coast wine country. You will want to leave the heels at home and dress in something that you would be comfortable walking the vineyards or wine caves in.

Also, wine country is known for its drastic swings in temperature. You will want to wear layers to prepare for Paso Robles’s chilly mornings and nights.
